Mothera

I kind of like moths. Most of these moths I have come across are delicate and pastel, quite pretty.

But the other night, THIS flew in, I called him Mothera, after the movie of the same name with the giant monster moth. This moth was as big as a sparrow, covered with fur, and it even scared the cats!!! It was like having a bird flying in the kitchen! When it lit on a tray on the fridge, Phil stood on a chair and got this photo. From that picture, I identified it as a Hawk moth. They can hover in place or fly backwards. Fortunately, he caught it and put it out. My hero!! Have you ever had any run-ins with big flying creatures?

Hurt no living thing:
Ladybird, nor butterfly,
Nor moth with dusty wing.
~Christina Georgina Rossetti
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal…
Matthew 6

Scary! I don't like big bugs and moths always have kind of given me the willies.

never heard the name before, but it is fitting and he is a little scary and congrats to big brave Phil for catching it. i love the one in the header, it looks like a Mexican skirt that is spread in a dance... do you know what it is? we don't get moths like this, lots of butterflies, but rare to find a moth.

Wow! Great photos. That's how I like to view a month--through a photograph.

Beautiful photos - funny I love butterflies and scared of moths. But in a way moths are butterflies - right?

We had a bat inside once - scared me to DEATH!

I am not fond of moths but I know they can be beautiful. As to flying critters encounters - Birds occasionally came down the chimney of our pre-retirement home. The cat would go crazy. As a matter of fact, I'd go crazy as well :-). Have a great day, Ginny

Hi Ginny, Many of the moths are very beautiful. I sure like that Rosetti verse. I used to teach elementary grades and occasionally a Christina Rosetti poem would be included in the curriculum we used at one of the schools where I was on faculty. Have a great Wed. tomorrow!

Oh no scary Mothera! As big as sparrow, that's way too scary! The moths you showed except that Mothera are very pretty indeed. Moths I'm familiar with have big black circle like eyes on their wings and I'm really scared of them.
Glad Phil got it out. Hopefully it won't come back!

I kind of like moths too Ginny. The one in your header is so pretty. There is one moth that we see here that mimics a hummingbird and is about the same size as the little birds.
